What do you guys do as regards your MOG's insurance?

My friendly Santam broker is still out trying to find Unimog as a a Mercedes model on their system. Not surprising since my Gelandenwagen is registerted, and has been for the last 18 years, as a stationwagon, a 230TE. I sent them a photo of the vehicle so that there cannot be any dispute in case of a claim.

Momentum also says they cannot find Unimog as a model on their system. They cannot insure it.

I am loath to take an uninsured vehicle on the road and need at least extended thrid party insurance.

Any suggestions?

Dawie

My mog is insured through my insurers (Hollard). They didn't seem to have any issues finding it on their system, although I do work through a broker, so maybe the broker had to help them find it...

My insurers wouldn't insure a vehicle >3500kg on my personal insurance policy, so I had to take out a commercial policy for my mog. This despite the fact that my mog is registered as a camper :(

Since there is no market value for such an old vehicle on the system (mine is a 1975 model), I specified the value at which the vehicle is to be insured.

I have started an investigation last year in the hope of finding a packaged solution for the Club Members.

To date I am still no further on that particular point as none approached seemed to know or was interested. "To old, where do we get spares, what is that?... Worst interaction was with the OUT-crowd...

Not even on 3rd party....

Maybe Paul's broker should get involved on our behalf, and as you say Dawie, at the least for 3rd party.

There is another possibility, SAVVA, the umbrella old car association has got insurance those guys lock into. But limited to Club affiliated vehicles and Club events driving only it seems. Maybe worth taking a look at that. They are on the WWW.

Thanks. Santam came back: Sorry not under existing householder's policy. Tried commercial but too old. They only insure post 1987.

"Work in progress - hobbies", such as my garden tractors are covered under householders, as apart of the total value. But they don't go on the road.

I will continue looking.

My broker is also currently busy doing research. It looks like it's very difficult to impossible to get insured under a personal policy. My Mog's previous owner insured it though his business though (as commercial vehicle), and didn't have age-related problems (it's a 1984).

If I manage to get somewhere, I'll post an update.
