Hi Tolley, I also have the 716.654 gearbox, but as you I don't have a reversing switch. I was going to just install a manual switch but have never bothered as I seldom drive after dark. But you could wire up the switch on the back of the gearbox to the wires at the gearlever.

Tried that but it doesn't work, the g wagon switch is a push activated and the gearbox is electric.
Many thanks for replying

luckily we in SA. No MOT required and its pretty lawless out here (TIC)
Hazards are quite versatile here in SA. It could mean anything. It is commonly used as alternative to indicators and might indicate I'm going to maybe go left or right or slow down and then decide which way and block everybody until i decide. Also could mean I'm going to make an illegal u turn or reverse in single lane traffic to pick up someone I missed down the road. It leaves everybody speculating a dozen possible meanings but often its none of those and what the driver does do is often a surprise you didnt consider. It's is hardly ever used as a sign of a problem.

I think what Alan meant was that it may be possible to connect a little contact on the lever like there are on w123 and w124. When the lever gets to reverse it makes the contact touch the circuit can complete and power reverse lights. It's a similar switch that shows when a door is open on many vehicles.

Hi Leonard, I must admit I saw a connector on the back of my box and was under the impression it would be a switch but never pursued it yet. Problem with the idea of the switch is there are no easy means to attach a switch to the shifter.

OK, so I have gone to my Box and had a look. It seems it is a closed switch when not in reverse and open in in reverse. You could use a relay to change the logic and use the switch.
