I have recently acquired a 1989 280GE VIN WDB46023327064810. I work offshore so haven't had the opportunity to drive it other than the initial test drive. My wife took it to Durban on a "maiden voyage" and it returned a consumption of 25l/100km which surprised all of us. I was expecting it to be heavy on fuel but this seems excessive. She was able to cruise at 100km/h and 120 on downhills, 80-90 on uphills. I am sure it needs a tune up as this also seems surprisingly slow. We live in Pretoria and would like to make contact with a reliable mechanic that can go over the vehicle and asses what needs to be done to increase performance and get fuel consumption a little better. Any advice would be useful. Otherwise its in perfect condition and we are looking forward to many years of ownership. Cheers

I would suggest Johan Marx, email me so that I could give you his number. He has a passion for the Galendewagen and well known in Pretoria

4 km/L is quite high, you should get at least 6 km/L. My 1984 280GE gets about 5km/L (20L/100km) in town.

Be careful where you send your G for repairs ,people have been bitten hard , I suggest Dirk Wentzel up north

Is Dirk Wentzel still working on Gs? I had understood his job at Carrera Motors takes up all his time. I approached him soon after I bought my 230GE and he was very reluctant to even look at my car.

FWIW, my SWB 1988/89 230GE automatic returns a fairly consistent 5.6km/l, which I find excessive. I don't know if it's just a function of a relatively small engine pushing a very heavy car through an automatic gearbox, or if I should be getting better economy. Other G drivers have suggested it should use less fuel, but I don't know what to do to improve consumption. My G easily cruises at 120km/h, but 70mph (about 115km/h) seems to be the sweet spot. It does slow down up hills.

I think it could be better. But at 120km/h they do start to drink.
My 300 GDT @ 120km/h towing my trailer gave me 18l/100km (5.55km/l):) as punishment.
The age of the motor and all related setting probably make a difference.

PS. Dirk does have more time on his hands again and does odd G jobs.

Hi Clayton,

The fuel consumption on my 2 G’s for comparison purposes:

240GD at 80 Km/h – 8 Km/Lt
280GE at 80-100 Km/h with AC – 5 Km/Lt (approx. 3000 rpm)
280GE at 115 Km/h with AC – 6 Km/Lt (3500 rpm sweet spot)

I have not constantly cruised faster than 115-120 in the 28GE, but have done the occasional “high speed” run to let her stretch her legs a bit. I’ve seen speeds of 140 Km/h and over on the GPS. I love that 280GE!!!
