How tall is your Mog

I took the plunge. Having worked on various mechanicals and electrics over the last year, I decided that before I fit my interior that I should revise the height of my camper body.

As a result I have pulled off all my side panels and am about to give the Mog a nip and tuck. but before I do so, I wanted to find out from other Moggers how tall their mogs are. Mine was currently coming in in at 3.4m from the top of the roof to the tarmac.

So far I thin I can shave off about 15 cms off that but would be happy if I can do a full 30cm. That said, part of my thinking was making no allowance for a pop up roof and having standing room inside. Seeing that I am 1.84cm that is where the challenges comes in.

Thanks for hauling those tape measures out. Also I would appreciate if you could share what overhead clearance issues or experiences you had with the height of your mog.

My camper mog stand at 3m, or now probably 3.1m after fitting solar panels. But I have a pop top roof, which means with the roof up I can stand upright (I'm 1.93m tall). With the roof down its a bit low for me...

Cheers

Hi
We are still in the build phase but this has been a big area of concern for us.

As I am 1,96m tall and have the silly desire to actually want to be able to stand up in the living space and thus we needed an inside design of 2m. With a GRP design that would give you a pure box of 2,2m.

We also have:
a pop-up area on top plus solar panels and 395 tyres standing 118cm off the ground. So there is very little chance of us getting in under 3m.

There is some really good reading about hight at http://www.xor.org.uk/unimog/mymog.htm

We have seen some high builds but we are comfortable with the general rule that as long as we stay under 3,5m our only challenge will be sway in the wind or being top heavy and needing some extra suspension support. Although French this build has some interesting points. http://www.desert-aventure.com/

So dont worry make it 3.4 hight.:!:

I agree a pop top is colder, but when really cold I just keep mine closed which still give around 1.75m clearance inside (the roof on mine is 6mm thick and insulated, so when closed has the same benefits as a closed camper, except for the clearance).

The benefit of a pop top in africa is how rapidly it lets out hot air when opened ;-)

If I had to redesign my camper I would design it with a pop top again as I like the lower profile.

Each design is a compromise in some way. At the end of the day as long as you like the design you have, you have the right design :)

Thanks for the replies and your experience Jochen.

I think that I am going to end up with a compromise here as I stood in front of my Mog this morning planning what I am going to do tonight. I realised that without squandering the money already spent and that my Mog has 14 inch tyres I will be trimming but not as aggressively as I first anticipated.

Looks like I will end up at about 3.2m. Which leaves me some allowance of solar panels later. Also will be slanting the front of the body, for drag purposes. Currently she moves like a brick through hot butter, you can just imagine the mess.

How about some pics? I'd love to see your mog - both now and after the trimming/modifications to the camper.

Its always nice to see other people's projects.

Since my last post, I took of all the panels exposing the bare tubular frame. Incidentally all the panels are going for a spray job, before I fit them. I have cut it lower already and by the end of this evening should have welded the last 3 uprights in place. The first pic is of it with its current height, I will post a new one this weekend of the shortened look. What a job it has been....

The mog is now trimmed down. Unbelievable the difference in feeling just standing inside it. Attached are two pics showing the trim. If anyone ever wants to get lots of rivets out I suggest, grinding the heads off, then punching them out with a punch and hammer, took about 20 secs per rivet. But I was still busy for about 4 hours. Lots and lots of rivets.
