Good evening all.

I am new to this forum, in fact I have not received my vehicle yet but is on the way from Senegal, West Africa to SA to sign for it.
I have bought a 2013 G350 Bluetech and need some input from you guys.

I want to know how good is the vehicle with towing? I want to use it to tow my boat, 21.5’ with 2 x 115 Outboards on, about 2.5 ton, to Mozambique in December for a fishing trip.
Mainly tar road except the last 10km which will be sand and then of course do beach launching.
How good is it in sand?

My previous vehicle was a 2.2 Land Rover 110 Defender, which I was happy with, but not SWAMBO. I also had a ML 270 Cdi , which impressed me immensely with the comfort and sand drive ability, but with a smaller boat. Only problem was the ground clearance.

Think SWAMBO miss the comfort of the Merc.
Told her we can buy another Merc, but nothing else than a G-Wagon.

I cannot afford the higher upper class, hence the G350.

Hope I have made the right decision and will not be disappointed.

Your insight will be much appreciated.
Regards

Hi Martin,

Firstly congratulations on your new G. One of our members towed his fully loaded Bush Lapa caravan through Namibia with us in April, up and over Van Zyl Pass and through a very wet and muddy Purros Canyon. He didn’t seem to have any issues at all.

Chris mentioned the softer springs, they can always be replaced by the harder rated springs if you need. Enjoy

Congrats and many happy smiles.
Looks like you got it at WeBuyCars?
Mean bumper on there as well. I take it it has a winch in there that needs the cable?

Got it from Autoxtreme In Silverton, Pretoria.
I have got a winch to fit in the bumper, but it looks like I am going to have a problem doing it because the oil cooler is in the way, or the winch will be in front of the cooler.
I need the winch to load my boat back on the trailer. Doing beach launching.

Congratulations on your new car. You might have problems invoking any kind of engine warranty on that car with the front bumper / winch that is shown. Mercedes do not like it when one changing the original configuration . The early Bluetech's had several engine problems and adding something to the front needs to be well considered. You should check with local dealership if it had the larger oil sump and cooler fitted as part of a recall. see also https://www.mb4x4.co.za/index.php?threads/g350-motor-problems.1942/page-7

Thanks Pete.
The vehicle has got 117000km on the clock and full dealer service history, so I hope that that the oil cooler issue has been sorted. I also got a print-out of all faults since new, 2013, but nothing of overheating issues.
Luckily I am a mechanic myself and will not do something stupid.
Thanks again for the advice.
Regards

You must check that the new sump / oil cooler has been fitted - there is a specific service code for that - they have even replaced an engine entirely when having executed that service code due to faults found. OTher Bluetec owners might be able to advise as to the name of the service code

I went to Mercedes and got a printout since new. Oil cooler was done and the bigger sump was already factory fitted.

Any advice where I can buy side steps for my vehicle.
Mercedes wants to charge me R58 000.

I can fabricate my own, but don't have the time whenever I go to SA.
