A while ago I read about disc conversions done by some guys in the USA.

Its quite popular over there to slap a set of 404 axles onto custom built pipe car rock crawlers and for these conversions they often add disc brakes. Iirc you can buy the conversion kits online.

Not sure how street legal these kits would be, but then, I doubt if any licensing authority in SA is likely to pic up on that, as long as the brakes are working... Just make sure you are satisfied that they are working properly - brakes are a seafety critical item, especially on a vehicle as heavy as a mog.

My personal opinion - leave the mog standard. If you need more braking power - there were some 404's that came standard with an air assist brake booster which I understand makes a difference. Rather try and locate one of these boosters and convert yours to a different spec (but still MB standard). For this you'll probably have to contact an overseas supplier.

cheers

Do you mind if we ask why?

I am told that I would achieve better stoping, faster cooling due to better ventilation on pads than on drums.

I would not change from stock. My 1963 works around 150 days a year and I have never felt the need for better stopping power. Perhaps your brake system just needs a good overhaul if you feel it is a little short on good stopping power. Otherwise drive slower :)

As if I can drive fast:lol:

Glad you picked up the irony there  I would not waste money on better brakes. What I have done to my Mog is added a freeflow exhaust and the civilian ignition kit plus matched spark plugs and it allows us to get up to speed a little quicker and also not drop down to a crawl on smaller inclines. I can cruise quite easily at 80km/h on the flat and have reached 90 but the though of defensive driving at 90 in a Mog is just too scary!
