Re: New engine or rebuild?

Thanks Andrew, I was able to remove the studs, I didn't know that it was removable and I figured it out with luck.
I have to re-con the radiator as it has a small leak, but what is the estimated price for the 4 tube radiator as I might consider it.

Another thing, the fuel/rev link that sits on the tapped cover, it has a link to the diesel pump and a small cylinder that connects to a bracket that fits on the diesel pump. The problem is if I fit the cylinder, It cant swivel correctly (too long). Is it necessary to fit that cylinder, because it is not pressured and I can't see how it could function better with it on.

You might want to give Dirk Wentzel or Paul Knapski a call.
They will know the settings off by heart

Dont know the current recore cost but do yourself a favour and speak to the oom at Topline radiators in Brits.

That thing you describe is the accelerator pedal damper and is handy only when you are driving on "hobbels" and your foot bounces on the pedal. I have never owned one of those on any of my G's!

The flywheel bolts 30 - 40 Nm plus 90 degrees - (min allowable dia. of bolt in "waist" = 8.1mm. Ensure flywheel balancing marks co-incide.)
The clutch pressure plate - 25Nm

Use threadlocking fluid.

Hey guys, I've put the engine in, started up 2 days ago. Sounds great! Still have to replace that reducer pipe from the thermostat housing and then I can take it for a spin.

Yesterday I had to replace the oil filter housing as it was pissing oil out where I stripped a bolt on the old one, but afterwards it didn't want to start again, as if it wasn't getting any fuel. I do hope it's not something big.

Will go 180km/h on the highway when I take it for a spin than I'll post a the traffic-cam picture just to show it's driving again, ;) because I don't think I will be able to stop!

Last stretch!

hey guys, I took the g for a drive yesterday, but it has no power what so ever. What is funny is that when I rev it while it is not moving or in gear, it gains revs but as soon as I start driving it is as if it is not gaining revs, and it is making a funny noise at the diesel pump.

Any help would be appreciated!

Funny noise?

Check injector pump timing, valve timing.

Another one - a long shot in the dark - take off the two little pipes that go to the engine stop valve on the back of the injector pump. If you have them the wrong way round they can half pull the valve and it starves the engine. But it does not make a funny noise.

I removed the vacuum pipe, but it didn't make a difference. I listened again for where the sound is coming from, and it sounded as if the cam/timing chain was making the noise, I really hope it doesn't need replacement? What might that be?

Andrew thanks very much for your help, I owe you a beer or 24.

chain tensioner ? In addition you could measure chain stretch by comparing mark on cam with the one on the crankshaft - 6deg is about the recommended limit before chain needs replacement. Also could be vacuum pump making noise - take it off and look at the wheel that runs on the fuel pump timing advance mechanism for wear

Hi Henry,
Are you well?
Sorry to hear that your motor has finally given up the ghost. Ok i know of a few engines lying around. Paul Knapski has a good 300 engine and it was overhauled and he remove it to install a 300 x 6 cylinder Turbo. His contact details are: 0834621646. The second lot are on Neel's v/d Merwe farm. There are a few down there. So you need to speak nice to Neels: 0823743687 or 0177124583. Paul's 300 x 5 Cylinder motor ran very well. Maar toe jeuk se x*#* . So best of luck and have fun

No! No! No! Buks is nog n bielie! Was wondering what happened to Franna, he's been awfully quite for some time now.
Hope he hasn't given up.
Ive heard that the Sprinter 2.2cdi Diesel will also fit on most of the older G's...that could be a very nice conversion. Heard of one the other day for R16 000 with a modification done to convert from electronic to manual injectors.

Unfortunately it was sold already!

There is one on Gumtree...I will search and see if I can find the link. Was thinking of buying it just in case it ends up in the wrong hands...;)
